Donna Newberg-Long, Ph.D.

Principal

Dr. Donna Newberg-Long received her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from University of Denver. Her passion for educating children and the need for a meaningful education for her 4 children led to the founding of a successful Waldorf school on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1983. Here she embraced the Hawaiian culture and taught and administered the school for 16 years.  She received her Master’s Degree in Education and Waldorf Certification from Antioch New England Graduate School and spent 5 years in Seattle where she moved after her mother fell ill. In Seattle, she taught 5th through 8th grade while also chairing the College of Teachers. During her years at SWS, she revitalized the middle school program and began traditions such as the middle school musical and electives program.  Dr. Long is pleased to return to Waldorf education after a sojourn in public and charter schools. She was the founding Principal of Peak to Peak Charter School in Lafayette, Colorado, and worked in Denver Public Schools with failing schools, diverse populations and English Language Learners. She began consulting at Mountain Phoenix in 2009 and fell in love with the students, families and the special setting that makes the school so unique.

She completed her Waldorf teacher training at Rudolf Steiner College in California in 2003 and has 20 years of experience teaching children from preschool to 8th grade. She enjoyed serving as the Campus Director at the original Mountain Phoenix Community School campus in Coal Creek Canyon as well.  Making Waldorf Education available to families regardless of financial ability has been a dream of hers.
